The World Games 2022 in Birmingham is reducing its carbon impact by purchasing solar renewable energy certificates (RECs).
The RECs supporting the games represent 2 million kilowatt-hours of carbon-free energy produced at Alabama Power’s solar facility at the Anniston Army Depot.
“As The World Games begin in Birmingham this week, we are pleased to announce that renewable energy certificates are among the ways we are ensuring this event achieves its sustainability goals, while also supporting renewable resources right here in Alabama,” said Nick Sellers, CEO of The World Games 2022.
The Rotaract Club of Birmingham Foundation has made a donation to support the RECs purchase.
“We are excited to partner with The World Games 2022 to fund sustainability efforts to help reduce the event’s carbon impact,” said Michael Stone, Rotaract Club of Birmingham Foundation chair.
“Protecting the environment is a focus area of the Rotaract Club of Birmingham Foundation and our members. We hope that through The World Games initiatives, visitors will leave Birmingham knowing that our community, and particularly our young professional members, are committed to supporting activities that promote environmental sustainability.”
Reducing the event’s carbon impact is part of a broad sustainability plan for The World Games 2022. Among the elements of the sustainability plan are:
Tree plantings across the city for beautification and air quality.
Installation of a solar-powered energy station in front of Protective Stadium that can be used by visitors to recharge electronic devices.
Vulcan Materials Company is the official sustainability sponsor for the event.
“We are very excited to announce this creative partnership to support the games with renewable energy certificates from resources in our state,” said Vulcan Materials Senior Vice President and General Counsel Denson Franklin III. “We believe that responsible, sustainable operations drive long-term, positive impact for our environment and our communities.”
Tony Smoke, Alabama Power senior vice president of Marketing and Economic Development, said the company is “thrilled to partner with The World Games 2022, Vulcan Materials, the young professionals of Rotaract and others to help support this global event’s sustainability goals.
“Renewable energy certificates are a budget-friendly option that more and more of all types of customers are using to illustrate their commitment to clean energy,” Smoke said.
