40 first responders from San Antonio Fire Department took a tour and discussed safety protocols with Vulcan employees, such as confined space concerns and practice rescues that could help in the event of a crisis.

Commissioner Fred Cloninger

Shop Supervisor Fred Cloninger was elected as Commissioner for the Town of Ellerbe, North Carolina. Fred was sworn in on December 4, 2017 and will hold a 4-year term from 2018-2021.

Food Pantry Donations Help The Hungry

A donation of 50 turkeys and approximately 1,000 pounds of canned goods was given to the 7th Street Food Pantry. In addition to the food drive, the Vulcan Foundation contributed funds toward the purchase of commercial freezers which will allow the Pantry to better serve the community.

A Rockin’ Experience

More than 130 first graders from Manteno Elementary School took a bus tour through the facility and stopped by stations where they met with experts to learn about mining and the environment.

Sampling Asphalt for Standardized Testing

Approximately 800 samples will be used for standardized testing of 1/2" rubber asphalt. Partnering with Caltrans for this round robin test, they were impressed with Vulcan’s commitment to safety.

Vulcan Excels at Southeast Region Mine Rescue

The Florida Mine Safety Program (FMSP) held its Inaugural Surface Mining Emergency Response Training and Competition. Two Mine Rescue teams were sent to compete in the mine rescue contest and won 1st Place Overall Champion.

Rescue Drills at North Quarry

Winston-Salem Fire Station #14 crew was welcomed in for a rescue drill. Members of the WSFD worked with Vulcan’s rescue crew to reenact emergency rescue scenarios for learning and practice.

The X Marks the Spot initiative encourages employees to stop and think: could it happen to me? On a quarterly basis, teams go out to where an injury occurred, marked with the X Marks the Spot sign, to discusses what went wrong.

Ready Mix Fleet Reduces CO2 Emissions

Since 2016, Ready Mixed Concrete has been retrofitted with a proprietary product called Carbon Cure to reduce CO2 emissions. So far, Vulcan can document reduction of more than 2 million pounds of CO2 – equivalent to over 2 million vehicle miles.
